29th October, 7pm, London.
'The Globalisation of Capital versus the Globalisation
of Spirit - a new strategy for radical social
transformation'.
First UK lecture by Rabbi Michael Lerner on the
growing 'Politics of Meaning' movement to combat
corporate globalisation (supporters include: Kevin
Danaher, Naomi Klein, Prof Saskia Sassen; Prof Andrew
Samuels, David Korten, John Sweeney (AFL-CIO), Wei
Jinsheng, Prof Cornel West, Louay Safi, Moctar Tayeb,
Naomi Wolf, The Nation, People Centred Development
Forum, Co-op America etc).
Michael Lerner is a veteran political activist - as
president of Berkeley Students for a Democratic
Society the FBI's J Edgar Hoover called him 'one of
the most dangerous criminals in the US' when he was
indicted as one of the 'Seattle Seven' for organising
anti-war demonstrations.
Rabbi Lerner has been described by some as America's
pre-eminent Jewish intellectual, and was chosen by
progressive journal Utne Reader as one of America's
100 most visionary thinkers.
His prinicpled position on negotiating peace with the
Palestinians has recently led to death-threats from
rightwing Jewish settlers and a boycott of the
progressive political magazine he edits, Tikkun
(www.tikkun.org).
*Organised by Matthew Kalman (Politics of Meaning,
UK), Victor Anderson (Greater London Authority member,
Green Party) and Matthew Taylor (Director, Institute
for Public Policy Research).
*Event details: 7pm, October 29th, Friends House,
Euston Road, London NW1 (opposite Euston
